Lansing fire victim starts fundraiser to become a yoga teacher

I met Derek Jones over this winter when he came to Just B Yoga for a class.

His presence was gentle and assured.

His practice was honest and his own.

His smile was pure sunshine.

I later found he was interested in yoga teacher training and thought there are many who could benefit from his spirit. I don’t run into people very often who instantly radiate the essence of practice. As a supporter of community yoga and yoga for the under served I believe we need more male teachers and more teachers of color. Our communities need to see strong male figures and see diversity reflected from the yoga mat in order for them to see themselves on that mat as well.

Derek suffered losing his job and a fire that destroyed most of what he owns just weeks before his teacher training at Hilltop Yoga was to begin. The training actually begins Friday, May 31.

PROLOGUE OF A YOGI – Derek’s Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to raise money.

He is being allowed to begin the training but needs help paying for the course.

If 100 people gave $20 Derek would have his tuition costs covered. I know the result will be a teacher and practitioner who will do great things on and off the mat, someone who will be a spiritual activist and who will give back to community.

I hope some of you will consider helping and help spread the word.

Namaste.
