Home Yoga Practice: Honesty and Quiet Mind

This insertion of silence is a crucial part of yoga practice. Turning off the distractions of phones, computers, music, other people’s voices …. Leaves us alone with the inner distractions and chatter. It helps isolate our attention. It helps create an honest and authentic space of practice. It makes it your own.

I’m not gonna lie. It can also drive us crazy! I notice how after a few times through I sequence I can hear my inner voice say, “cool, now you know what would make this better? Let’s play some Beyonce to the sequence next!”

Set an intention, but be open for course corrections

Intention does not replace surrender to truth. Intention should direct us toward it. Intention also isn’t the destination. When the drive becomes the objective we get consumed in constant doing that goes nowhere.

Virtually the best yoga experience!

Thank you Lansing for voting Just B Yoga and Belinda Thurston the best yoga studio and best instructor in the Lansing City Pulse this year.

Gratitude for all the firsts and growth in 2020

I know I haven’t spoken with you all in quite a while. Quite frankly I’ve been running hard, then running in place, then sometimes hardly running at all. Since mid-March it feels like we experienced a tectonic shift. The last class at the studio was a Sunday, Chakra Yoga Flow. I had put up posters about hand washing, face masks and apologies for the bleach smell.
But after that life has been a blur.
Yep, we shifted some classes to livestreaming. Nope, haven’t had any classes at the studio since. Yep, we still have the studio space, but I don’t know for how long.
What we’ve been up to since then have offered growth, letting go and new vision.

Home Yoga Practice: Tapas/Discipline

Tapas, or devotion, is a key fire in the engine of our yoga practice. Applied energy toward positive change – a healthy body and mind-spirit. Tapas is one of the Niyamas, or ways of personal behavior, in yoga. The Niyamas guide the “what it’s all about.”  “Tapas is the conscious effort to achieve ultimate union

Week 2: Plan your practice, Practice Your Plan – acceptance and binding

Acceptance of what happens is certainly a worthwhile chew for our times. The pandemic and our fight for freedom, justice and equality can stir discontent. At least it keeps our focus on what’s wrong and the need to fix. It can feel like acceptance means we are OK with the state of the world. It doesn’t.
