Yoga for your eyes and vision

My eyes are tired. They are tired of screens and electronic lighting. They are tired of seeing the harshness of the world; trying to see things your way; not seeing what I need to. The eyes - the windows to the outside world and the portals to our inner vision and inner spirit guides - need just as much attention as hips and core and legs.

My eyes are tired.

They are tired of screens and electronic lighting.

They are tired of trying to take in information – more of it and more quickly.

They are tired of trying to see my vision for myself in my work and my relationships.

They are tired of seeing the harshness of the world.

They are tired of trying to see things your way, his way, her way, their way.

They are tired of not seeing what is right before me.

The eyes – the windows to the outside world and the portals to our inner vision and inner spirit guides – need just as much attention as hips and core and legs.

They are vital. They need to be healthy and strong. (what’s the range of distances you ask your eyes to focus on?)

They should be cleansed and purified. (What toxins are touching the eye surface and lubricants?; What toxic information or scenes have been assaulting the eyes?)

Yoga offers specific practices to help connect with, heal and strengthen our outer and inner vision.

  • Inversions
  • Closed eye practice – Pratyahara
  • External eye stimulation – Brahmarhi pranayama
  • Eyelid compression/eye socket – manual massage
  • Guided meditation – in-body/out-body visualization

This home yoga practice session focuses on postures that can stimulate awareness of our vision center. Some isolate the third eye – between the eyebrows; some focus on the head overall (top of the head, neck, ears, etc.); some focus on the eyeballs themselves.

Poses/body movements include: child’s pose, rabbit pose, downward dog, dolphin; east-west stretch, wide legged forward fold; spinal twists, dead bug pose (viparita kirani), bridge; savasana

Exercises: neck rotation, eye movements/massages, neck stretches

Guided meditation in savasana – guided inner body visualization and outer body visualization (approx 8 mins).
