Vandalism, Yoga and Forgiveness

Our new bike rack with the custom-welded logo was vandalized yesterday. A student told a Just B teacher that they saw some “kids” ripping the letters off. Intentional meanness. Blatant and open daytime vandals. I could go on and on about feeling violated and perplexed at such a display of evil. But I won’t. It’s

108 Sun Salutations prep: The physical body, the physical practice

Tuesday we will honor the Summer Solstice with a practice of 108 Sun Salutations (Surya Namasakaras) 108 is a big number. It’s that number that makes lots of folks cringe. We’ve discussed preparing our spirit for this journey (108 Sun Salutations prep: Spirit, Journey and Journals). But we cannot ignore the physical side and the

108 Sun Salutations prep: Spirit, journey and journals

A lot of folks are asking me about how hard doing the 108 sun salutations will be in our special Summer Solstice Yoga practice. “Will it kick my ass?” “My body isn’t strong enough.” “How bad am I going to ache afterward?” While there is an undeniable physicality to the 108 sun salutation practice, and

The yoga Malcolm taught

Light creates understanding, understanding creates love, love creates patience, patience creates unity.” – El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X), May 19, 1925-Feb. 21, 1965 Many of you have heard me talk about walking by my mom’s bedroom  as a child and seeing her in salamba sarvangasana – shoulder

Video captures REO Town renaissance at Art Alley

I love underdogs and folks who hoist themselves by their bootstraps. Maybe that’s my attraction to Michigan and Lansing in particular. We’ve stopped laying down and accepting being kicked. We’re seizing the day, seizing our potential, seizing our own futures! New ideas and efforts abound. One of them is REO Art Alley. It’s more than

Just B and the Yoga Refuge Co-op connection

A few months ago I ran into a non-profit yoga organization in Colorado called the Yoga Refuge Co-op trolling on the internet. The founder and I struck up email and Facebook niceties and well-wishes. I had no idea it would blossom into a beautiful interstate relationship that would offer opportunities to live our yoga practices

Community: There is no try, only do

It has taken me decades of life and arriving in Lansing after working at more than six newspapers to truly feel and be a part of community. This isn’t a gratuitous #lovelansing moment (although I love you guys, and you know that). I hope it’s a touch deeper.

Make a difference

Tonight’s the night! Our Wednesday yoga class is moving to Art Alley at 6 p.m. We’re practicing yoga to DJ Rachael and we’re gathering afterward with food from Feed Your Karma. This special 2-hour class is about celebrating and giving back to the community. The drive to give back comes from a lot of places.
